Graph Types
  • NeSA Growth Version 1.1--This spreadsheet creates charts and a graph to look at the progress of students from year to year on the NeSA assessments. An overview and instruction are on the first sheet of the spreadsheet. Google Sheet NeSA growth version 1.1.xls
  • Efficiency Rates 1.0--This spreadsheet can be used to check for growth from grade to grade. The percent proficient at each grade level is compared to the proficiency rate at the grade below. Efficiency Rate 1.0.xlsx The Excel 2004 may not have all features. Efficiency Rate 1.0 Excel 2004.xls
  • Efficiency Rates 1.1--This spreadsheet has a few more columns so that subgroups can be compared. Google Sheet Efficiency Rates 1.1
  • Correlation:Instructions to find a correlation between a NRT and NeSA assessment.

  • Data Analyzer-use the tab at the left to find description, sample reports and spreadsheets. This spreadsheet creates a 4 level color coding of student level for up to 10 different assessments. Several other graphs are also created.
  • Box Plots

Other ideas for Looking at Your Data
The documents below provide examples of graphs, when the graphs should be used, hints about creating graphs, and different graphs created from the same data.
Formats to Present Data PDF.pdf This document demonstrates several different types of graphs to analyze data. List of types of graphs is shown below.
Formats to Present Data XLSX.xlsx This is the spreadsheet that was used to create the graphs found in the document. Note is is an xlsx file. I have had much better luck with creating graphs using the Windows Excel rather than the Mac. Once the graphs are created they can be viewed and updated in either format.
  • Growth model Thanks to Carla Noerrlinger, Director of Research Division, Omaha Public Schools, Omaha for these ideas to display data
  • Gap analysis
  • Trend Data, Student Achievement by Sub Test
  • Compare two groups with levels on several assessments
  • Compare sub-groups on One assessment
  • Compare Grade level scores with State scores on NeSA
  • Changes in levels from year to year (2 different formats)
Graph Types.pdf This document has the graph types listed below with information about how they best show the data.

steps.xls Ladder for Intersecting Data Types Data Analysis for Continuous School Improvement by Victoria Bernhardt identifies four types of data, school program or process, perceptions, student learning and demographic. The ten levels of the ladder depend on the number of intersections of the data types.

Data Driven Dialogue or Protocol

The protocol below leads a team to begin by thinking of questions about student achievement. Participants begin with the statements: I assume…., I predict …., I wonder …., There is also a very good article from ASCD, “Answering Questions That Count” December 2008/January 2009, pages 18-24.
